New Boca Grande Boat Ramp Expansion Set to Double Capacity at Placida West Boat Ramp

The Placida West Boat Ramp in Charlotte County is undergoing a $7 million expansion. This expansion is set to double its capacity, Charlotte County noted that the expansion has garnered popularity within the community.

The existing facility, situated at Placida Road and the Boca Grande Causeway, offers three launch lanes, three boarding piers, 79 boat trailer parking spaces, portable toilets, and an ice vending machine. Plans for expansion include incorporating a neighboring parcel of land for additional space and facilities.

Some cool new features, such as a combined total of 158 boat trailer parking spaces, six launch lanes, an ADA accessible kayak launch, pavilions with shading, and an ice vending machine, will be added. Moreover, accessibility from Placida Road and Boca Grande Causeway will be improved.

Charlotte County states that a restroom facility will replace the existing portable toilets. Permit applications have been submitted to the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers and the Florida Department of Environmental Protection.

County officials held a joint meeting with both agencies to discuss the project. Options for further reduction of environmental impacts were provided by the county’s design team.

It is unconfirmed but, construction may be contracted by Florida Premier Contractors, with Coastal Engineering Consultants handling design engineering and architecture. The project is currently in the design development phase, scheduled for completion in August 2024.

Funding for the expansion will come from revenues generated by the 2020 local option sales tax, according to the County. Estimated costs include $900,000 for design, $5,800,000 for construction, and $300,000 for other expenses, totaling $7,000,000.

To most boaters and anglers, the long-awaited boat ramp in the Tarpon Capitol of the World will be a relief during the season and busy months. Therefore, allowing them quick access to the Gulf and Boca Grande.
